Newfoundland as the 51st State?

During WW2 Newfoundland became economic close to the US. There was even some support for an economic union with the US, but it didn't amount to anything. What changes would be needed for Newfoundland in the elections of 1949 for a path to US Statehood on the ballot, and would they choose it? Or is this ASB?

I figured they would become a US territory after the vote of 49, within ten to 15 years they would become a state.

Not sure why there needs to be a lengthy period of territory since it already satisfies the requirements for statehood. Texas was admitted to the Union almost immediately upon annexation. And California after 2 years.

You'd need changes in Newfoundland, as well as the UK (and maybe changes in Canada accomplishing that) in order for the US option to be allowed on the ballot paper.

No not really, during the referendum upon the independence of Newfoundland; there was four options: remain a British crown colony, join the confederation of Canada, declared nominal independence , or join America. If you change a couple of things around, I can easily see Newfoundland joining the USA.

It is not ASB.

If I was writing a TL, I would have FDR to be a strong supporter of Newfoundland being a state. And when the USA has so much leverage over the UK in 1940-1945, FDR would simply insist that the British strongly support Newfoundland joining the USA. This should solve the British not supporting issues. I am not sure Newfoundland would support the USA over Canada on a straight vote, but FDR was very talented, and could have found a way to make it attractive to the Newfoundlanders.
