What could lead to NZ suffering economic bankruptcy, following with much of its youth getting wiped out during a world war, becoming directly ruled by Britain for a while, and then finally being absorbed by Australia?
I think that this might be more likely pre WW1. I was wondering about something like this the other day, sometime either before or after the Second South African War? Something just around the time that the Australian colonies were getting to the final stages of federation, or there abouts
The only way in which New Zealand could've suffered the fate of Newfoundland was if New Zealand became bankrupt during the Great Depression but, although things were pretty grim here at the time, New Zealand managed to survive the Great Depression even better than many much larger countries.

Not that we could help; Australia was bankrupt and had the highest unemployment rate in the world! (Try explaining that one out, those that blame the rise of Hitler and the Nazis purely on the Great Depression.)
