New Year's Eve 1995: A hijacked plane destroys the Eiffel Tower.

If the plane has to cross Paris, he could still fare well: by these times, which politician could give the order to shot down a civilian plane above the most populated city of France?

The casualties among tourists under the Eiffel Tower would be high during Christmas vacations. I live next to the Eiffel Tower: believe me.
I certainly do, I went up the damn thing this very Tuesday and the crowd underneath at ~1900 was insane, so I waited until ~2130 to go up:D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lionel_JospinThese are the statistics for the Presidential elections in 1995:
Lionel Jospin Socialist Party (PS) 7,098,191 23.30% Jacques Chirac Rally for the Republic (RPR) 6,348,696 20.84% Édouard Balladur splinter of Rally for the Republic (RPR), supported by the Union for French Democracy (UDF) 5,658,996 18.57% Jean-Marie Le Pen Front National (FN) 4,571,138 15.00%
Really, getting Le Pen in second place or even winning isn't impossible, not even remotely ASB. No more difficult than Ross Perot, anyway. Zing! :D
Even though the Eiffel Tower might be a much bigger target in terms of symbolism, the Tour de Montparnasse would, of course, have a much bigger death toll. Which one, you think, would have the most impact/chance f succeeding?

Tour Montparnasse. It's in the way of a direct attack from the south, is more likely to collapse and has the added benefit of being visible from every level (including the ground below) of the tower itself, meaning all those hundreds of tourists and cameras are going to have clear shots, and the tv broadcasting can go ahead.

I would like to think that, in 1995, American President Bill Clinton would gallantly insist on the privilege of having Americans lovingly craft the components for a replica of the Eiffel Tower and then assemble it in place by the time of the attack's anniversary.

It'd be a hell of an event, maybe with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing "La Marseillaise" when the lights go on?

Well, THAT would make the French love you:D
I recently posted this same WI in a Brazilian forum also dedicated to AH, and one member suggested that, had Le Pen won, the intellectual strata of the French would be cornered and would certainly move to Barcelona, which would become the cultural capital of Europe and experience an even bigger Renaissance, while French culture itself would suffer more than a bit.
I think that, Le Pen being elected in 1995(not impossible, given the general fatigue of the Socialists and the statistics I showed) he would almost certainly push for war against Algeria, something that could also have been started in the final months of Mitterand. This would serve as a measure of glory, seeing as it's the closest France can get from recovering her empire, while still punishing the terrorists.
