well it is only an outline of an alternative history mod of Heart of Iron IV, but I will try my best express it clearly.
In 1582, Oda Nobunaga(織田信長) wasn't murdered by his subject in coup at Honnō-ji (Japanese: 本能寺の変).

the grey part is the area controlled by Oda clan in 1560
As a famous leader during Senkoku period, Nobunaga used his power to continue his conquest. Before his death, Japan was nearly under his rule. During 1620s, his son Oda Nobutada finally defeated all enemies and stablized his rule. The final shogunate - Oda began.
Different from our history, Nobunaga was interested with western culture, and focused on trade. His son succeeded his politics. Japan didn't apply policy of "Sakoku" (鎖国, country closed and an isolationist foreign policy) but kept open to westerns.

In China, Ming Empire was stroke by series of disasters and internal crisis. Peasants' revolts, Mongolian invasion and terrible climate change destroyed Ming. But luckily, first emperor of Qing Aisin Gioro Nurhaci (Manchurian: 爱新觉罗·努尔哈赤) had never unified, in this timeline, tribes of Manchurian. Unluckily, Ming Empire can't avoid the terror of natural disasters.
In 1629, North China was suffering with famine, but emperor Zhu Youjian (Chinese: 朱由检) didn't want to help them. Peoples in Shaanxi were unified under the banner of Li Zicheng (Chinese: 李自成) and a great peasants' uprising stormed the whole China.
In 1644, Li Zicheng's army captured Peking. Different from history, Emperor Zhu Youjian didn't suicide but escaped to south China, and he rebuilt a southern regime of Ming. The Southern Ming(南明) whose capital was at Nanking feared that the peasant' s army would attack soon, but they had no force to defend themselves. As princes from royal family claiming resprctively throne, Southern Ming fell into chaos.
In despair, Zhu Youjian sent Zheng Zhilong(Chinese: 郑芝龙) to ask aid from Japan(well, that's a true history, I AM SURE, Chinese did seek help from Japan for defeating Manchurians). Shogun Oda Nobuakira(织田信明, sadly, in history, the family of Oda has declined at that time) decided to aid Ming in exchange of vassalizing Korea. Zhu Youjian had to meet his demand, thus Japan sent army to China. Although having a larger number than Japan-Ming army, peasant's army was finally defeated. Zhu Youjian came back to Peking with guard of Japanese. Several years later, he was found death by an "accident".
In 1670, son of Zhu Youjian decided "Shanrang"(Chinese: 禅让, to abdicate and had over throne to a worthy and capable one, but in history, there was never a true and willing "Shanrang"), handed his throne to Japanese 112th emperor Go-Sai(Japanese: 後西院天皇, in history he had passed away in 1663), then his son Higashiyama(Japanese: 東山天皇) succeeded, and became Tenno of Japan, Tianzi of China and King of Korea. Although scholars advocated the stability of Japanese royal family, the continuing revolts still stormed China and Korea, but the revolts were all suppressed finally.

After ruling both China and Japan, lots of Japanese immigrated into China, and Japanese elites also contact closer to China. The dynasty always called by Chinese as Dynasty He (Chinese: 大和王朝, Japanese call themselves as Yamato nation, in Chinese character it is "和" whose pronunciation in Chinese is "He"). After decades of years war, Dynasty He couldn't defeat Manchu and Mongolia, but these two nations agreed to become He's tribal states.
At the same time, the open policy encouraged people to trade with foreigners. Chinese and Japanese settled in Philippine and Indonesian and produced tabacco, specie for trading with westerns. They established colonies in Philippine and Sarawak named "Lanfang" and "Dongning"(Chinese: 兰芳, 东宁, they were countries who appeared in history).
Then Chinese sailors found a continent in south by accident and they colonized there and call the continent of nowadays Australia and New Zealand as "Minamishu" and "Oshu"(Japanese: 南州, 奥州).
In north, Japanese explorer found Alaska, for the native Americans are similar to Ezo people in Japanese history, this land was called "Shin Ezo"(Japanese: 新蝦夷, in fact Ezo was an insulting call of Ainu nation in ancient time).
Shogun was surprised by these findings. He sent a large fleet, led by Hasekura Tsunenaga(or baptized as "Francisco Felipe Faxicura", Japanese: 支倉六右衛門常長, in our history, he firstly and successfully crossed Pacific ocean by Japan-made western ship ), with the help of ports in Shin Ezo and of Western sailors' guide, it crossed Pacific ocean and finally arrived at West coast of New World, the sailors landed at Izumo(出雲, it is said that Izumo was first place where Gods descended in Japan), nowadays San Francisco and settled there. This new land was called as Akitsushima(Japanese: 秋津洲, a classical call of Japan). With development of colonies' golden mine and Chinese, Tea, Spice trade, Sino-Japanese empire advanced quickly.

Time came into 19th century. Awaken nationalists were threatening the whole empire. At same time, independent colonies remained their loyalty to emperor, and Japanese colonial empire became a loose federation like the English Commonwealth in history. Such as Austrian-Hungarian, she can't afford any burdens and was stroke by many internal conflicts: nationalism awaked, the distribution of power can't both satisfy elites from three countries, and foreigners waited for a chance to destroy her.
In 1860s, with help some powerful generals, Emperor Meiji(Japanese: 明治天皇) defeated Shogun's army and ended Shogunate regime. He claimed to be a real ruler of Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

He commenced Meiji Restoration (Japanese: 明治維新, modernisation of Emperor Meiji) and rendered Japan a constitutional monarchy. But rapid development of society harmed people's interest, and gap between the rich and the poor became dreadful. Peasant's revolt and worker's strike became popular.
In later of 19th century, Marxism was introduced into Japan. For regarding Tsardom Russia as rival, the Bolsheviks exiled by Tsar can get political protection in Japan, and they started to organize young people and spread their ideologues. The communist organization appeared in Tokyo, Seoul, Peking, and Shanghai. Meiji tried to used secret policemen to eliminate communists.
On 20 May 1910, a young anarchist tried to assassinate Emperor Meiji and he got it. This incident was called Taigyaku Jiken (Japanese: 大逆事件, the High Treason Incident). The successor Taishō (Japanese: 大正天皇) decided to find the master of assassination. As leader of Japanese communists, and first person to introduce Marxism into Japan, Kotoku Shusui(Japanese: 幸德秋水) was condemned to death after completely illegal procedures.

This incident caused a nationwide revolt by students and workers. The rule of Emperor became weaker and weaker.
In 1910s, an unsuccessful revolution in Russia overthrew Tsar's throne, but Bolshevics didn't came into power as our history. They were exiled and condemned to death by Kerensky's provisional government. But a red storm broke in Euroasian continent.
In 1918, the riot of rice became a new revolution. Corps commanders refused to fire at civilians, at same time Imperial Navy declared uprising. The Emperor regime was overthrown totally. New left coalition government founded Socialist Union of East Asia.
A civil war lasting one more years broke between SUEA's Red Army and Imperial Arrmy. Supported by nationalists and peasants, red army defeated them. Emporer Taisho was executed after a public trial. The royalists, ancient bureautics and those who were regarded as "reactionaries" escaped to former colonies, such as Akitsushima and Minamishu.

In 1920, the land in west coast of new continent occupied California (Izumo, 出雲), Oregon, Washingto, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, also part of Wyoming and Colorado(Akashu, 赤州), but Arizona and New Mexico didn't belong to her. To be simple, her east border was Rocky Mountain(Shin Taihang Mountain, 新太行山) and Colorado River(Aka River, 赤川, same methode of naming as Spanish). And part of Metro Vancouver belonged to Washington.
At the same year, the exiled arrived at Akitsushima. As the democratic revolution broke here, in 1920, people overthrew colonial governor's dictatorship. But the royalists and constitutionalists dominated the waves of people and came into power. They rendered her a Theocratic country. The Theocracy in Akitsushima is based on State-Shinto(国家神道) and dictatorship in fact of Shinkan Council(神官議会, a legislative and executive institution composed by Shinto clergy and scholars "Shinkan", well that's similar to what happened in Iran). The rulers claimed her mandate of heaven to reconquer Japan and purge Reds there. The motto of Akitsushima is "Hakkō ichiu", in Japanese "八紘一宇", it means "All directions in the world belong to Akitsushima".

Another revolution also broke in Minamishu and Oshu where the governors chose negociation with people and a democratic republic was established. But communist ideas can't attract most of people, to defend the possible invasion of SUEA, governments of Minamishu and Oshu decided to found a federation of both of two countries. Thus Federation of Mimami-Oshu(南奥联邦) was founded, and she created quickly a small but enough powerful fleet to guard her coast and many islands. The people in Minami-Oshu believed that they were only liberal and democratic country in Pan-Pacific region.
