New Mexico or New State Name?

New Mexico or New Name?

The U.S. acquired the State of New Mexico after the American-Mexican War in 1848. The territory had been named Nuevo México and is often been incorrectly believed to have taken its name from the nation of Mexico. However, Nuevo México was given its name in 1563, and again in 1581, by Spanish explorers who believed the area contained wealthy Indian cultures similar to those of the Aztec Empire.

What if, after acquiring the new territory and then state, America decided to rename it? What would be some good state names for it?

Here's some of mine:
Fremont
Polkania
Gila
Gadsden
Shiprock
Commancheria
Apacheria
Pueblo
Navajo
Cibola
Hawikuh
Trans-Pecos
Houston
Amerindia
Anasazi
Athabaskia
East Arizona
West Texas

Just to name a few. Any others?

I vote State of Taylor, for his contributions during the Mexican War and in trying to get New Mexico territory admitted directly as President, and combating the Slave Power despite him being a slave owner.

Cripes, the best state name and flag (though the Pueblo of Zia/Tsiya would have appreciated if the state had asked their permission first). The state/territory/province. It has had the name since 1563 (Francisco de Ibarra). The other early states were named after second/third rate English royalty and nobility (Delaware), UK provinces/islands, or Anglicized Indian names.

Would Albuquerque been a possible state name?

Do you really want to live in an entire state where the air smells like warm root beer, where the shriners and the lepers play their ukuleles all day long, and anyone on the street will gladly shave your back for a nickel?

Cibola, Anasazi, Pueblo, Apacheria, and Comancheria all seem pretty plausible to me. Fremont also sounds believable, and I actually once considered Houston myself for an early TL idea I'd had a long, long time ago.

Actually, yeah, I like this as well.

Don't forget that New York was actually named for the locality in England(whether it was the city, or the county, there is some debate), and Rhode Island was originally Dutch(Roode Eylandt, IIRC).

What about West Texas since before the Texas Republic became part of the US, there was some discussion as to how far west the state actually went. Some old maps show the Republic of Texas actually containing half of today's New Mexico.

(Bonus thought: Since the OTL state of New Mexico/West Texas is much smaller then OTL (East) Texas, what if upon the admission of Texas to the US and the formation of NM, the two would be devided into parts of equal size... Let's say by lobbing everything west of Eagle Pass, or west of Plano in with New Mexico/East Texas and leaving East Texas with Dallas, San Antonio and everything to the east?)

Naming it after the capital, Santa Fe would have been acceptable. Heck, under Spain and Mexico, the province was technically called Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico

I get that reference.

I think Pueblo is a better name.
