In this book from 1768 Hon. George Murray advocates that the island of New Britain should be settled by British.
John Campbell had already suggested the same some 20 years earlier.
However, I set my events after 1768, because in 1767 Sir Philip Carteret had discovered and claimed for Britain New Ireland so 1770-75 both could've been settled in the same time.
If NB were colonized in 1770 and NI in 1775, would it have been a crown colony, a company colony (of a revived South Sea Company) or a proprietary colony, or a EIC colony (like New Albion in modern West Papua 1793-95, about which I'll write soon)?
Could the colonies have been succesfull and resulted in an European majority population within a century and responsible government?
In my conworld, I've thought to uphold the real history in that 1885 UK renounced claims to the islands so that they could be annexed to German New Guinea. That's because in my Melanesian federation scheme, German settlers play a big role, and I want to have their place names.
If the colonies had a small European population and were economically unimportant, UK could've handed them over to Germany, but if they were succesful, that would've been different.
But what you think, could they have succeeded?
