New Book

I am writing a book based on the days of invasion by the soviet union on the day the berlin wall fell. any suggestions on what the story line should be like i already have the soviets sailing into the bay of seattle and a nuclear attack on alaska but i want an invasion of new york to fit in some where
all of europe and asia are taken but africa bands together and is resisting soviet control
maybe an invasion of south america and houston and florida maybe

I would assume that any Soviet nuclear attack on any U.S. state would result in a full retaliatory nuclear strike on the U.S.S.R. by the U.S.

So why would the Soviets invite such retaliation by attacking Alaska? What would the Soviets hope to gain by such an attack?

BTW: (My age is about to show) I developed an interest in civil defense after seeing the TV movie The Day After when it was originally broadcast during the 1984 presidential election. It was mostly a dormant interest until the end of the school year for the 11th grade. I was at the library and was sick and tired of studying for the pre-calculus final (knowing that I was going to fail the course anyway) that I picked up a volume of Encyclopedia Britannica and found the article on civil defense without really looking for it. I started taking notes and then spent that summer, the next school year and the summer after that researching civil defense and nuclear war. One of the books that I read pointed out that since the Soviet Union had lost 20,000,000 people to the Germans during WWII (likely closer to 30,000,000), Soviet military thinking was that they could launch a full-scale nuclear strike against the U.S. and then withstand a full-scale counter strike and then use its conventional military forces to invade Western Europe and thereby regain whatever industry they had lost in the U.S. counter strike. But then the Russians haven’t been able to invade Chechnya with conventional forces so what hope could they have had against the Europeans (well, OK, the British, God knows the French wont’ fight).

I would put the Soviet strike on the U.S. sometime before the Berlin Wall came down. If the Soviets were to wait until the Wall is coming down, the strike on the U.S. would be too late to be believable. But, I could easily see the Soviets provoking a fight with the U.S. as a way of diverting attention from the crumbling Warsaw Pact.

Unless the entire US navy has been taken out, There is no way the Soviet Fleet could sortie, and not be stopped halfway to the US

I think the USSR greatly under estimated the degrading impact a Nuke exchange would have on its Conventional Forces.

A Global Thermonuclear War a.k.a. Global Tic-Tac-Toe.

The idea of the Soviets invading mainland USA is either ASB or bordering ASB. They couldn't have maintained the supply lines. Did you get the idea from Red Dawn/ World in Conflict BTW? That scenario is also ASB, since the US would have precautions againts unmarked container ships.

If I remember right the Berlin Wall came down in October. Would the Soviet navy have been ice-bound by that time of the year?

Likely true, but we are talking about the Soviets. They were never really known for their intelligence.

If that is the idea for a new book I would advise that you don't quit your day job.
