Hello everyone. Currently I'm working on a timeline in which the Netherlands joined the Allies during WW1 and how the experience of the war would influence Dutch politics and society. It's coming together her nicely, except for one tiny thing. How to get the Netherlands involved in the war in the first place...
Dutch neutrality was to the benefit of all sides involved. For Germany it meant a neutral state on their western flank and a 'gap' in the British blockade to smuggle goods through. For the British it meant fewer ports to blockade and no far flung colonial wars. The Netherlands themselves had no viable reason to enter the war either. Only thing I can think of is that the Dutch government, in a moment of suicidal overconfidence, refuses German troop transports through Limburg in 1914 and gets invaded for their efforts. This would involve a set of actions almost unthinkable of the capable (and pro-German) minority government of the time.
Does someone have a more original and plausible idea?
