When the Great war in 1914 broke out the Netherlands could remain neutral and in contrary of Belgium stay neutral.
During the conflict this neutrality was tested many times by both sides of the combattants. And by members of the general staff and officer corp whom many where pro German, this out of variuos resons. Military practical thinking or motivation.
At the end of 1917 and the beginning of 1918 the neutrality was tested again. This time by Germany who demanded free transport of building material through Limburg. Limburg is a province which is attached as an apendix tho the rest of the Neterlands between Germany and Belhium. The building materials where needed to construct concrete bunkers.
What if the war cabinet followed the advice and the political mood of the Queen to open the borders for the German army and by doing so commit them to the Centrals.
The motivation of the General staff was pure military practical, not political.
The Dutch army was no match for the Geramna army even if this was badly feeded and worn out of the long trench war, but was extreemly trained.
Or what if the German High command did not had any patience and overrun the Netherland whith a Blitz raid....
February 1918, Dutch war Cabinet recieves an ultimatum from the Genral High command; let supplies and building materials pass through the province Limburg. The Cabinet aked advise of the General staff of the sate of defence. The general staaf is verry sceptical and in no morale of defending the country agains the Geramn army. The Cabinet hesistates not willing to give in to the ultimatum. Theis hesitation took to long. 48 hours after recieving the ultimatum, in the early hours, a train is raided in Rosendaal and head to the bridges over at Moerdijk. Stormtroopers occupy the bridge heads and after offloading supplies and some attilery, the train moves further. The same is done at the bridges in Dordrecht and finaly the bulk is offloaded at the Maas bridges in Rotterdam. A seccond train right after the first one steams up through the Hague, the gouverment seat. When the sun rises most inportant bridges are occupied and in defended by hardened German storm troopers and half of the memebers of the Cabinet including the prime mininster and staff officers are captured in the Hague.
More German troops rush from Belgium in to the country.
Confusion and individual fighting of troops in Brabant. Most of the Dutch army is posistioned in forts of the Waterline in the Province Utrecht and in the forts around Amsterdam, plus a lot troops spread out around the border.
The German High command shows only inters in the port of Rotterdam and the Hague. Amsterdam is considered of no importance since the fortified ring is not connected with the North Sea and a counter attack is not likeley just as an atack is due to the inundated terain. The forts of the Waterline in Utrecht could rounded up from attacks in the back. How ever the simpathy for the German side is among the General staff and the officer corp considerable so there is not much guided resistant against the raid.
Suppose the dutch general staff chose the side of the Germans...........
