All,
I have a little tricky one for all Africa enthusiasts:
Mandela became the rallying point for a lot of international anti-apartheid movements and organisations.
Insofar as he was out of the "rough and tumble" of ANC politics, he gained the upper hand as nobody could fault him for any decisions and actions.
If Mandela had been released in the beginning of the 1980's, say 1982, would it have strengthened ANC or would it have created more internal struggle?
The major players would still have been Oliver Thambo who held the organisation together from Zambia, Sisulu, etc.
Would there have been a power struggle between Thambo and Mandela, out in the open?
Would there have been two centres: Zambia with Thambo, SA with Mandela (if Mandela was not allowed to travel)?
What would have been the rallying point Internationally if Mandela was not in jail, but free to do whatever?
Ivan
