Need help for TL

I'm wanting to do an ASB timeline involving the Japanese Empire, but I don't want to use the historical version. Rather, I want to use a Japanese Empire that acted and behaved as close as possible to that of the British Empire. What POD would I need to get such a Japan, and what might be some of the consequences of said POD?

You need to unify Japan and get rid of the samurai before 1650 and you need an outward-looking ideology for this united Japan. No sakoku.

This belongs in pre-1900, because to get such a result you need a POD long before 1900.

Japan converts to Christianity circa 1600 is one possibility.

Japan then does not close itself from the world for 250 years, but goes out instead, trading and settling and colonizing as England/Britain did.

The entire Age of Sail is radically altered, because there is a non-white nation-state acting as a peer to the nation-states of Europe all over the world. That affects everyone's thinking in subtle ways.

Japan dominates the Pacific, becoming the sovereign of Micronesia, Hawaii, and probably Melanesia, Polynesia, New Zealand, and Australia.

(It doesn't matter whether Japan makes a grand effort to settle Australia. Britain did it with a handful of convicts from the other side of the world.)

Japan may take over the East Indies. Japan is probably Catholic, and thus hostile to the Dutch. If the Portuguese can't hold on, Japan replaces them. They're a lot bigger and closer than the Netherlands.

Japan may take a major role in India; they're a lot closer than Britain or France.

Japan probably keeps Russia out of the Siberian coastlands; they get the furs, sell them to China instead. Japan settles Alaska and the Pacific coast of North America. Not heavily, but even a thin layer will grow. Conflict with Spain in California?

If Japan controls a lot of the Spice Islands and parts of India, Japanese ships may be sailing to Europe - the trade was very profitable. There may be Japanese outposts in Africa to support these voyages.

However, the structure would be different. Instead of the consumers going out to grab the source, the producers are bringing the stuff to market.
