It was a series from the 1980s I think. Set in space, but was basically a retelling of WW2.
Japanese empire in space with samaris against a United States (planets had names like New Wyoming and New Washington, etc). Travel was via warp gates that were propegated by slower than light Von Neumann ships, so the sphere of FTL travel was expanding.
What I remember was that there was a civil war/ coup taking place in the US in space while at same time fighting the Japanese in space.
Anyone recognize this?
