Near ASB: Lee turns on Davis

What if Davis does something to really piss of Lee and Lee complains to the press about how Davis is treating him. Let's make it mid 1864? Can Davis keep his presidency until 1865, or will he be impeached or resign?

Well, I doubt Davis would be impeached or resign, but it would definitely damage his administration severely. Most probably the Confederate Congress acts to force Davis to name Lee as General in Chief and give Lee more direct control over the Confederate war effort. In OTL they did this in early 1865, when Lee had no real chance to influence things much by having such power. If it had happened a year earlier, who knows what might have come of it? Enough to win the war for the South? Probably not. But the course of the final year could have been quite different. One thing that comes to mind which is virtually certain in such a scenario...Hood never gets in command of the Army of Tennessee outside Atlanta. Joe Johnson stays on, or some other General is selected. And if the fall of Atlanta is delayed by 2-3 months as a result, that could have all sorts of butterflies.

Davis becoming largely hated in the Confederacy and the South was in one of the strongest "Lee worship" periods in its history. His soldiers would write their family about how Lee hates him and there would be a lot of nasty letters about Davis delivered to the Confederate Senate and House.
