NDP,Liberal,Bloc alliance

Anyone here any good with Canadian politics? I've been musing on the issue of the coalition government proposed way back when and what the political ramifications might be had that motion succeded? Even though I'm Canadian i really don't have a clear view of what they'd accomplish so some input on the issue would be appreciated.

If it had occurred, it would have led to a very temporary coalition government.
Likely several of the center right Liberal backbenchers would jump ship, either as independents or to the Conservative party.
The Liberals would lose support in the polls so quickly it would be a virtual freefall. The center and right wings of the Liberals wouldn't like supporting the NDP and especially not the Bloc.
The Bloc would also lose a lot of support, after fighting the Liberals so long they join up with them? Their supporters would evaporate over night.
The NDP would probably get a lift, especially if they were seen to be in the drivers seat.

The Conservatives would act angry on the surface, but start laughing behind the scenes. They would have almost every right wing and center right supporter throwing themselves behind the Blue Machine.
In the election that would occur within a year (most likely), the Conservatives would claim that democracy had been denied, that every other party was extreme left, and all they cared about was power.

On election night the Liberals would be ripped in two as the left wing went NDP, the Right wing went Conservative and the middle stayed home.
The Bloc being seen as no longer separatists or helpful to Quebec would bleed support to the NDP, and a large number would stay home.
The NDP would become the opposition party.
THe Conservatives walk away from the election with an overwhelming majority, likely 190+ seats.

It wouldn't have lasted long.

IIRC the agreement the Bloc signed was to support the coalition for a year. After that Gilles would undoubtedly make some sort of outrageous demand he knew the Libs/NDP couldn't agree to in order to provoke a constitutional crisis.

Also the Liberals would start to bleed support, and possibly MPs and grandees, to the Conservatives, putting a limit on how far they could support the coalition as it was pulled further leftwards.

In the end, you'd probably end up with an election about the same time as the last one, with much the same result: a Conservative majority, a Liberal collapse, and an NDP surge in Quebec.

Sounds basically just a massive version of this years election. Only quicker.

Is there anytime that this Coalition (perhaps excluding the Bloc) could be viable?

Certainly Paul Martin could have tried it, but I think the result would have been much the same: it would tear the Liberals apart, while strengthening and legitimizing the NDP. The idea of an "ABC" coalition is a far-left fantasy: historically there's been more common ground between the Liberals and Conservatives than the Liberals and NDP.

IMHO Paul Martin's mistake was offering the NDP the give-aways he did in order to prop up his minority.
