In this book it is mentioned in a chapter about US diplomacy during the Barbarossa invasion that in either October or November Stalin tried to negotiate a peace deal with the Nazis but things didn't work out. Regardless of whether this actually happened, assuming something happened to Hitler during the course of Barbarossa so that by October Goering had taken power and solidified his position, how likely was he to accept an offer of peace and on what terms and was Stalin more willing to make and attempt to negotiate with someone other than Hitler? Assuming so, what would terms look like and how likely is the peace to last? How would Britain and the US as well as Japan react to a deal between the new Nazi regime and Stalin? What happens to Stalin for making a deal, does he initiate another round of purges to scare anyone thinking about a regime change out of the idea (even if just a figment of his paranoia)? How does the rest of the war play out if a post-Hitler regime is able then to secure peace in October-November 1941?
