iFinally, none of this addresses the concern that the original scientists would be strongly JEWISH and therefore disinclined to help Germany.

Or that the anti-semitic whack-jobs running the place would have any faith in their work product.

Would YOU trust the folks you've been condemning as subhuman scum, persecuting, and threatening to exterminate when they walk up and promise you a superweapon?

"here Herr Hitler - let us demonstrate the new weapon we developed for you, stand right here"

"NEIN NEIN NEIN - Kill the pig-dog-assassins!"

gunfire

End of jewish involvement in german atomic program, which effectively means the end of the program itself.

:D:rolleyes:
It's not like Stalin's Soviet Union had the monopoly on double-think and self-delusion. :D:rolleyes:

What role could spies and double agents play in all this?

Well the Arabs figured out nukes would be destructive during the crusade, so 1930s nukes aren't unreasonable:D

Zero. Germany would be attempting to create the atomic bomb FIRST.

It would be MI-6, the NKVD and the OSS that reap the dividends of espionage.

OK, some reality for those unfamiliar with physics in the 1930's.
...

Now, the Germans have a number of insoluable problems.
They dont have access to a lot of good quality Uranium ore - although there was some in Chzekoslovakia.
They dont have the available electrical supplies to make heavy water and run the separation processes.
They dont have access to the high-purity carbon the allies did.
They very probably dont have PTFE either.
They also dont have the number of nuclear physicists the allies do, yet somehow they have to make progress at the same or better speed...

the lack of heavy water (D2O) was one of main reasion why the NAZI never got the A-bomb
the only source for Nazi was in Norway (one reasion for the invasion)
but British agents destroy the Factory in James Bond style
and sank a Boat with last cargo of D2O
(the D2O for Manhattan program came from Canada)

the Nazi used around $20 Billion for development of
V-1, V-2 Rocket, Jet fighter Me 262, Jetbomber, rocket interceptor Me 163 etc.
so the German A-bomb programs were under-funded

some of real A-bomb Programs in beginn WW2
"Uranverein" under Command of Reichsluftfahrtministerium
"Uranprojekt" of Heisenberg
A-bomb Project by Reichsbildungsministerium (Ministry of Education !)
Hydrogen bomb Program by the Heereswaffenamt
"clean hydrogen bomb" proposing by Burkhard Heim

For Uranium, in that time the only source for good quality Uran
was Belgium Kongo
the Uran for the Manhattan Project came from there

although there are still rumors, that extrem right belgians
supply Third Reich with Uranium from Belgium Kongo during WW2
i think thats only a Urban legend

Germany prewar was teetering on the verge of bankruptcy, under the strain of supporting hitler's remilitarization. For example, there were a few times when only a quick infusion of cash from a conquest (anchluss, for instance) was able to keep germany from going under. Germany completly lacked the industrial or economic capacity to pull out an atomic bomb, especially if they must also rearm and quite possibly fight a war.

And the weapons systems example only illustrates the german inability to do this. The United States was basically able to fund the manhattan project with leftovers from the war effort, with no real sacrifices in conventional warmaking capability. None of the other combatants had the resources (or the freedom to commit them) necessary to make the bomb work (a prewar nuclear program is different, but suffers from similar obstacles). To invest in nuclear weapons is going to be a long, difficult, expensive, time consuming process with an uncertain payoff at a later date while other weapons with more immediate uses and needs are left by the wayside.
