Nazi Germany Under Reinhardt Heydrich

Reinhardt Heydrich was probably the most intelligent and competent senior Nazi leader, although a very evil man. He dreamed of replacing Hitler. If Hitler was assassinated in 1938, Goering and Himmler were positioned to replace him. But could have Heydrich managed to replace Hitler? If so, what would Nazi Germany have been like? Would there have been a world war?

I don’t think Heydrich would try to take over in 38. He wouldn’t have enough support outside of the SS to do so. He’d probably back Goering and take over the whole of the SS after ousting Himmler with Goering’s approval and assistance as a reward for his services and show of loyalty.

After that he would consolidate his powers over all branches of security including the Abwher. Further down the road he might try to take out Goering . And if he was successful? I think he would try to increase the size of the Reich as much as possible. I think he would follow Hitler’s example and try to take as much territory without going to war, but his ultimate goal like Hitler would be war with Soviet Union. I think he was a true believer.
