Naval veterans as president

Getting a naval veteran elected president earlier would be interesting, especially as modern history has seen many of them (Kennedy, Nixon, etc....) However, in the post-Civil War era, So, we come first to a man who actually was courted for the Democrats in 1900- Admiral George Dewey. Can anyone speculate how he would have run if not for his apolitical comments? And then, are there any other earlier candidates for the post?

Not the us, but what about Reichspräsident Alfred von Tirpitz in 1925, he was after all a meaber of the DNVP :D
