Naval air support at Guadalcanal

What would have happened if the U.S. Navy had supported the Marine landings on Guadalcanal instead of pulling their carriers out of the danger zone?

they already had land based air at Henderson by the time the carriers pulled back, they were more useful screening against IJN attacks/ships by being at sea

Oh yea.

No real changes would have occurred. No matter what the carrier were going to have to depart sooner or later. The cruiser action still happens and IJN ships get away in the dark.

The only change might be that the transport force sticks around long enough to complete unloading. Even that is questionable give the disaster at Savo.

It is worth noting that the presence of the carriers didn't prevent the IJN from coming down the Slot on during the day of August 8th.
