Native American WI: Mississippian Confederation.

In what is today the Southeast of the United States in the 1500s, there were highly advanced societies that were the ancestors of today's Cherokee and Choctaw tribes. Suppose that these ancestral societies had by the time De Leon came calling built something like Opechecanough in Virginia or Hiawatha in the North. Suppose that there is a league of southeastern native Americans that could use the formidable military power of that alliance against the too-curious white man and knock him loose. How much in general would a pan-Mississippian alliance impact the survivors once the plagues of Europeans start the decimation? What impact would a greater sense of unity among American aborigines have when *Tecumseh or someone like him emerges among them? Could we see a pan-American aboriginal alliance to check the U.S.? How does U.S. Native alliances if they can be built affect the First Nations in Canada?

Some answers would be appreciated for a TL I'm working on.

The only problem is that the Cherokee came from New York/Pennsylvania and only migrated to the SE in the late 1600/early 1700. They were able to do this only through the death of the MIssisspian cultures from Spanish plagues brought on by De Soto and others.

A better POD is that the norse had a longer colony in Vinland and spread Old World diesases in the 1100's before being wiped out. This would allow the NA native reminants to have a higher diesase resistant population in the 1600's that could have wiped out the small colonies (ie Roanoak (sp))

If this had happened European powers would have traded more and been less conquerry (is that a world, well it is now!) They would have treated these NA confederations like lesser European powers and traded with them. I could see gunpowder and metalurrgy working it way inland.

However it would not have been a Cherokee Confederation in the south but a Mississippian Culture and we proabably wouldn't know who the Cherokee were due to them being wiped out/absorbed by the rising power of the 5 nations (and I wouldn't be here to tell you this either)
