OTOH, had the U.S. not dropped the Bomb on Japan, Stalin might've convinced himself she wouldn't drop it on Russia, either, & decided to invade Germany in 1950...:eek:

The question then becomes do the Soviets still acquire the bomb? They didn't get one until 1949, and if there is no Hiroshima or Nagasaki to prove the bombs "worth" then Stalin may not acquire one or give it the same funding and priorities that he did. He invades Germany, the US Air Force drops a bomb on Soviet formations, annhilating an entire army with just one bomb.

The American's have more of these bombs, and a monopoly. Stalin begins demanding his scientists build him one, and in total paranoia begins removing people who he believes failed him. Any massive troop formations the Soviets manage to conjure up is quickly destroyed. The Red Army begins to fear the sound of plane engines, and begin to refuse orders. Some regiments surrender in mass to the west, high ranking generals begin to conspire to overthrow Stalin.

In the end the USSR is forced out of Eastern Europe, and perhaps even dissolved in favor of the Republic of Russia. The Cold War is over before it really begins, and Communism is discredited the same way Fascism was a few years prior.

Well that'd epicly change the Cold war strategy of the Russians, maybe more populace encouraged in the eastern parts?

On the Nationalist China issue it'd be pro-American almost certainly. After all it's elite was educated in America and the Marshall Plan might decide to pump money in China. Yes it was anti-colonial so we can see it as most of the time an American ally thought occasionaly pissing it off like OTL India but more pro-American.

True. It's likely he wouldn't, especially since he was halfway convinced it was disinformation to begin with.

I'm less sure USAF would use it tactically than against, say, Moscow or (my preference:D) Kuibishev (where over 70% Sov electric power was generated). Either way, a quick end & Sov overthrow are likely, I agree.

Unless, TTL (which I think I had in mind but didn't say outright:mad:) doesn't see the Bomb develop at all, without Germany threatening to first....

I wonder whether a Nationalist China would seen Macau and Hong Kong returned to it?
If in OTL they could be returned to the PRC, I don't see why they wouldn't be to a Nationalist China.

A Nationalist China could have some very interesting outcomes regarding the UN Security Council over time. Assuming a Nationalist China is pro-America/Western, the USSR might often find itself outnumbered 4-1 by the other permanent members; ok they still have a veto but could give the council a very different dynamic.
That was the case in OTL until 1971.

But yes, nationalization was a huge part of the GMD's industry.
Fair point, but I don't think too much should be read into that. At that time, nationalization was a huge part of many Western countries' economies. In Britain, the Attlee government nationalized whole swathes of the economy; in France, the Fourth Republic practiced dirigisme and strictly regulated the creation of new businesses, etc. Just as other non-Communist countries eventually reduced the amount of state control over the economy, so would, probably, China.

I dunno. They managed some impressive modernization and development in the 1930s, given the Depression and the Japanese breathing down their necks.
Indeed, the GMD gets a bad rap for corruption and incompetence, both of which were serious issues, but the fact remains that in less than favorable circumstances, they still managed to almost pull China together economically during the Nanjing Decade. And this while dealing with warlord activity, Communist insurgency, Japanese encroachment and a global depression.

My feelings are that China would be almost identical to communist china today, save for the fact it would 10 years ahead of the communists. With USSR and USA arguing over cooperation with china, the chinese will reap the benifits of military hardware from both sides. Gaining the best both contries had to offer. A China with a blue water navy, large modern, professional army, and american supplied aircraft technology. Gulp... Thats one hell of a military.

So basicly ROC will be like the Bastard child of the USSR and USA with both arents trying to fight for the kids visiting hours. While the kid gets spoiled rotten
