Napoleon was never born

What effect would this have on France? Would the monarchy have been restored? Would 1848 revolts have taken place? And what about Prussia/Germany? Oh, the butterflies!

I don't think German unification would've been possible without Napoleon. Consolidated hundreds of German states into about a dozen.

Another French general would have replaced him, my own favorite would be Lazare Hoche, but he died in September 1797 in Germany. Without Napoleon, maybe Hoche would be commander in chief in upper Italy.

If the "Pseudo-Napoleon" of your ATL is in most ways like Napoleon (and be successul!), he would also intervene in Germany. Frontiers would change, maybe other Dynasties would become middle powers. But the tendency would stay: German territories would be cleansed.

Anyway, the real questions are:
1. Would another general be as successful as Napoleon?
2. Would another general have stayed Consul or also turned monarchist?

Hoche is indeed a favorite of mine also.

Since his death by disease was caused by his exile following his disgrace, it's quite possible it would be butterflied away. Even possible Hoche's own coup would suceed ( say pichegru is sent to take Bonapartes' place, so isn't approched by Hoche and therefore cannot betray him ).

If not and butterflies are kept to a minimum until the coup against the directoire, the usual suspects to take power instead of Napoleon and become Consul ( though maybe not FIRST consul ) are Massena and Moreau, as they had the most popularity at that point and the conspirators needed a popular general as a figurehead.

Would either of them pull a Monk? For Moreau the answer is definitely no. For Massena, barely possibly, if royal power is very limited, as he was very venal, but I still think not. Both had rather strong republican ideas.

The main point is that neither was as ambitious as Napoleon and both wanted a genuine republic, I don't see either going for life consulate, much less empire. Similarly, they won't try to conquer everything in sight as soon as anyone disobey an order.

SO the First french republic is likely to stay alive up to now, in consulate form.

In my Universal Republic (which is not an über realistisch time line) setting, Napoleon dies in a charge and is remembered simply as a republican hero.

It's Lafayette who has managed to be at the right place at the right time, and is head of the state.

I made him as successfull as Napoleon (winning all the same battles) and less power hungry (keeping true to republicanism), thus able to make a full scale European federal republic (with compromise with ally monarchs).

Staging a 20 year war to unify Europe from 1792 to 1812, leaving office after that (had passed a martial law/state of emergency) and finished his life 22 years in french north America.
