Napoleon I, Emperor of Austria

No, not that Napoleon. Napoleon II of France.

Granted, I'm not 100% on Austrian succession laws but it looks like at one point the Eaglet's mother was third in line for the throne. Should some misfortune take out his mother and 2 uncles, rather than him, what happens when Francis I dies?

Had Napoleon been pulled from the succession at this point? Could he inherit through his late mother? And would the Austrian court have the audacity to put a former Emperor of the French on their own Imperial throne? And the all important question I always ask, what happens next?

Nope, the Habsburgs had a semi-salic succession law. All males must go before women are permitted to inherit. And even in that case, I doubt "Franz von Reichstadt" would ever be considered as a potential successor.

Who would then be Emperor of Austria.

Royals are not some crowned particles into vacuum. There was a whole political apparel in Austria who would not accept the son of Napoléon onto the throne, whatever his rights. Legitimate heirs had been deprived of their rights before.

I can assume the British, Russians and even the Prussians will not like it.

As near as I can tell (admittedly through Wikipedia so it may not be accurate) Leopold II of Tuscany is next in line.

Of course, Napoleon is not going to like being skipped like that, but is there anyone who might rally to his cause? Austria might be better off if it had a Bonaparte on the throne during the 19th Century, but that's in hind sight.

Would love to see having Napoleon I son on the throne in Austria and Napoleon I nephew on the throne in France, one country will not be happy and that is going to be Prussia.
