Yes, his biggest mistakes were Spain and Russia (and maybe letting Prussia survive).

it was the simplest level of diplomatic niceties...recognizing Napoleon's existance, being on speaking terms with him.

(in a paralel vein, didn't the US have an ambassador in Nazi Germany?)
