Napoleon, Emperor of Mexico

According to the always correct Wikipedia, Mexican revolutionaries offered to crown Joseph Bonaparte Emperor of Mexico in 1820 but he refused. Lets say he doesn't, could anything conceivably come of this or is it just another random fact in history?

Joseph was always a great candidate to be murdered in his sleep by Hispanophone revolutionaries. Why not take another crack at it?

Joseph (not Napoleon) as Emperor of Mexico is an interesting idea. Not sure how how serious an idea it was, but interesting.

His full name was Joseph-Napoleon Bonaparte :D I doubt the whole arrangement would have lasting effects but it may be worth a short TL?

I can't see him ending much better than Iturbide. At least he can flee back to the US, though. Further, I can't see the European powers willing to put up with a Bonaparte revival at this point, even on the other side side of the Atlantic. Spain in particular would have every reason to work to quash renascent josefinismo.

So, if it could be managed (and I have serious doubts) the lasting effect may be more European meddling in the New World. This might actually be a pretty good POD for an anti-Monroe Doctrine timeline, actually.

The Bonapartes will not be welcome as sovereigns anywhere but the French part of Louisiana.
