Napoleon and Josephine meet earlier or don't meet at all.

Hi all

Is there any way Napoleon and Josephine could meet earlier and maybe having a child with him? (I am open to proposals.) I have been tracking Napoleons and Josephine's movements and in 1784 Napoleon was in Paris attending École Militaire but his time there was cut short from two years to one. As for her, she was probably partying in Paris. Does anyone think this scenario is possible? as she only gave birth to Hortense de Beauharnais in 1783.

Or you could have the possibility of no Josephine and Napoleon. (I am open to other proposals) In 1794 Alexandre de Beauharnais was executed because he poorly defended Mainz in the siege of 1793. Let's say he wins the siege and he lives who will Napoleon marry or will he still get involved with Josephine?

Regards

In either cases, Napoleon doesn't get his Italy army command, so doesn't get his early fame, so the directoire doesn't put him in command of an Expedition to Egypt (which was largely Napoleon's brainchild and the Directoire agreed mainly to get him out of France), so he's not so much in the public eye, so he is not part of 18 Brumaire equivalent (or at least not in such an important position), so no First Consul and no Emperor.

Explanation: If Napoleon meets Josephine earlier, she is not Barras mistress; if they don't meet, she is not interested in Napoleon. In either case, she does not push Barras to give Napoleon an independent command.

Hum, Bonaparte met Barras before Joséphine. Barras entrusted Bonaparte with the repression of the royalist insurrection and promoted him to lieutenant general before he organized the meeting between Bonaparte and Joséphine. So, even if there is no history between Barras and Joséphine, it is still likely Barras would give Bonaparte the Italian command.

An interesting alternative is Bonaparte marrying a young girl in Auxonne or Paris in 1789-1790. They have a boy but, as Bonaparte goes up in the ranks, he feels less and less for his wife, before divorcing after his meeting with Joséphine. We can branch up with OTL, but Napoléon has his heir, an heir who is 24 in 1814.

I think if Alexandre de Beauharnais was more competent this scenario would be more likely than Napoleon meeting Josephine earlier, however it is sad that they could not have a child.

I doubt Napoleon, once he had his career to a flying start, would bother with Josephine. She was quite a lot older than him, he already is powerful and anyway, Napoleon and Josephine are the kind of people who are not suited for marriage.

As I understand, part of the initial attraction for Napoleon was the fact that she wasn't interested or truly available. Napoleon took this as a challenge and in pursuit fell in love for the first time. So, find him another soutably unavailable and disinterested mistress of someone else. She'd have to be as charming and popular as Josephine....maybe with better teeth and younger?

Bonaparte was engaged to Désirée Clary when he met Joséphine. No lovestory maybe, but a marriage nonetheless probably cum prole.

I have found out why Josephine became barren!!!!!

Read the following:

"In 1779, she first arrived in France at 16 to wed Alexandre de Beauharnais. This marriage of convenience produced two children. The couple soon separated, and Rose became socially prominent as she mingled in the salons of Paris. Although her husband initially supported the Revolution, during The Reign of Terror he was arrested and executed. Narrowly escaping the guillotine herself, Rose spent months in prison, a hardship that is believed to have severely affected her health and left her barren." - http://www.fouquet.cc/kristin/Writing/IncomparableJosephine.html

Therefore if does not get arrested she does not become barren. She was arrested because "Joséphine was too close to the counter-revolutionary financial circles, the Committee ordered her arrest on 18 April 1794."

What could prevent it this?

I didn't know you didn't know that, your grace, or I'd have told ya. But research is rarely wasted. Premature menopause can be caused by severe, extended trauma. (Especially for those not used to hardships.)

Have hubby send her away when the trouble starts, along with a couple of other nobility wives and come back asap when it's safe, perhaps? She'll still be a widow, but in good company and without the detriment to her health.
