During WWII the Allies called themselves the United Nations, which made sense (so long as you're discouting those nations that fought for the Axis, of course :p)

Entente: An agreement between two or more governments or powers for cooperative action or policy.[/SIZE]
As long as France is involved. (Even the Little Entente had France involved - as a guarantor or something, IIRC. I don't think France was a MEMBER, though)

The Little Entente was an alliance of Czechoslovakia, Rumania and Yugoslavia against an attack by Hungary.
France at the same time guaranteed Czechoslovakia against Germany. Right up to the moment when the Czechs needed them, whereupon the French asked the British to find them away out and they all ended up at Munich.

These days you’d refer to the relationship between Britain-America and the Soviet Union as a Coalition.
Back then it was important to play up the Alliance’s solidarity for propaganda purposes and play down Uncle Joe’s nasty side as much as possible.

The Little Entente was an alliance formed in 1920 and 1921 by Czechoslovakia, Romania and Yugoslavia with the purpose of common defense against Hungarian irredentism and the prevention of a Habsburg restoration. France supported the alliance by signing treaties with each member country.
The Little Entente began to break down in 1936 and disbanded completely in 1938. France had seen the Little Entente as an opportunity, in the interests of French security, to revitalize the threat of a two-front war against Germany.

Confederation sounds like a nation-state, and cartel brings to mind narcotics businesses, but what about "combine"?

Half-Life 2? :)

Honestly, cartel sounds more like a business association than anything of a military nature. I'd also like to throw out "front", which in this sense typically means a loose association of politically-motivated paramilitary entities.
