Names of Colonial Successors

This thread is for the discussion on the possible names of Colonial Successors. For instance what be the name of an independent, larger New Netherlands be, would the name change or not, and if it did what could it be.

Well, for New Netherland (it was singular, oddly enough) depends how big it is, but perhaps something like "Appalachenland" or "Noord-Amerika".

personally, i always liked the idea of giving mythological names to such places. for example, a Chinese successor state in the Pacific could be called "Penglai"

mythology aside, ive also liked the idea of naming places after their discoverers. Columbia is an obvious example, but for a country in the area of the US, ive always liked "Cabotania" and even plan to include such a country as a satire of the US in an ASB project of mine. earlier today, i was also mulling over a country named after Amerigo Vespucci where his surname is used instead, so maybe Vespuccia or Vespucciana

I've used Christiana for New Sweden. I really like that one.

Just like Canada originally referred to one single settlement, New Netherland could be Manhattan, and New England could be Shawmut or Mashawomuck.

personally, ive always liked the idea of OTL New York continuing to be called "New Amsterdam"; im even considering making it the name of a new city built on the site of New York for a book that im writing, set a thousand years after the OTL city is wiped off the map by a nuke

For the Dutch their current country is singular as well; 'The Netherland', whilst 'The Netherlands' is The Netherland+Belgium and used to refer to Charles V's realm and the 1815-1839 Kingdom. Since the American colony was founded when the parent state was singular, its natural it would be New Netherland.

Naturally we English don't give a shit and just call it Holland/get the pluralisation completely wrong ;).

Imagine if there was an old Netherland, independent New Netherland, and an independent, formerly Dutch Western Australia named New Holland all in the same TL. :p

Don't get too excited, the rest of the European languages do the same thing. Los Países Bajos, Les Pays-Bas, Die Niederlande, I Paessi Bassi, etc.

Add a separate "South Netherlands" and an inependent Old Zeeland, and you've got yourself an interesting world map.
