Names in all Languages

Sometimes when you are writing timelines or scenarios it is difficult to come up with a really good name. So you guys should post your best sites to find names from ANY language. Whether it be English, Russian, Yiddish, or Latin. I hope to compile such a list of combos, we will never have trouble with character names again. Also, try your best to translate name into the Modern English alphabet as possible. For instance Arabic/Russian/etc. You may post the name in another alphabet, but include the Modern English Alphabet lettering as well please. In other words don't post Николай, post Nikolai. Thank you! :D

There are other factors to consider, too. In, say, a world where Christianity never takes off, most European names that are considered "traditional" in our reality will be irrelevent (since many names across European languages are simply localized variations of bibical names).

A while back, I had posted this site in the "Nice reference sites" thread: http://www.behindthename.com/

It is rather complete and gives you a good number of name used around the world nowadays. It also has quite good list regarding Biblical, Mythological and Ancient names.

What I do find the most interesting though is that it does a bit of "ancestry" of names. What I mean is that, for example, they explain how the name Clovis is a shortened version of Clodovicus, which itself is a latinized form of Chlodovech, an old germanic name that was also the origin of the german name Ludwig (and its equivalents in other languages like Louis, Lewis, Luis, etc...).

It also gives the original meaning of those names, such as the fact the name Philip originally meant "horse lover" in Greek (From Phil, love, and Hippos, horse).

In overall, it's a pretty good site when it comes to names.
