my original 2008 election prediction

I remember around 2005 or 2006 predicting that Russ Feingold would be the Democratic nominee in 2008 and that he would run against George Allen, that Obama would wait until 2016 and serve one term after Feingold's two terms after having possibly been Attorney General in the Feingold administration.

Obviously it didn't pan out that way, but what if it did? If Allen avoided the "macaca" incident and held onto his senate seat in 06 before jumping in the ring. What would that election have been like and who would there running mates have been?

The problem with Allen is that his baggage wasn't just the "Macaca" incident. That set off several revelations of racial baggage: things like leaving a severed deer's head in a black family's mailbox, routinely using the N-word, and trying to incite racial tensions up through his college years.

So you have to find a way to downplay all this and prevent it from becoming an issue during the campaign - my guess is that's it too much baggage for him to win the Republican nomination.

If so a Feingold vs McCain race would have been interesting.
