My Country, `This of Thee

This is another interactive, so everyone's welcome to add to the story. I have been respectfully told that I am making too many inconsistencies, so all constructive criticism is appreciated. :)

1976 Republican Primary Results:

Ronald Reagan Acceptance Speech Excerpt: August 19, 1976

[Applause/cheers]

"Thank you... thank you, I... I'm warmed! Really!"

[Applause dies down]

"I want to extend my thanks to those who have helped me: my beloved wife, Nancy, and our children. They have stood by me all these years, and my love and cherish for them is unending."

[Applause]

"I also want to thank the Governor of Pennsylvania, Richard Schweiker, for accepting the call of duty to be our country's next Vice President."

[Applause]

"But, leaving the best for last, I must thank a brave man, a war hero, a Congressman, and our leader: Gerald Ford!"

[Applause/jeers]

"Come on down, Jerry! Give us a speech!"

[President and First Lady Ford go on stage, shake hands with Governor and Ms Reagan]

"Thank you... thank you."

Reagan stumbles during the campaign on social security, but Carter has a couple of stumbles, too. Reagan narrowly wins the '76 general.

With increased military spending and tax cuts, all of President Reagan's instincts are Keynesian. And he's somewhat more successful with late '70s stagflation than OTL. But still same botched mess with Iran.

Heading into the '80 general against the Democratic nominee _________ , it looks like the Gipper only has an outside chance . . .

(Dick Schweiker was Senator from Pennsylvania)
