Musicians go to war

This thread is based on asking WI certain musicians in the Vietnam era actually went to war, such as Billy Joel, who admitted in a 1990 post-STORMFRONT interview that he was a draft dodger during the 60s, and wrote GOODNIGHT SAIGON in 1982 after spending time and crying with some friends of his who did serve. Now, WI Joel himself had served, say had he gone to Parris Island and done a tour or 2 in the Marines ? (BTW, the key male characters in his musical MOVIN' OUT do exactly that, with 1 of em being KIA) How would his experiences have influenced him as a musician and songwriter ?

Anybody think of any other such musical figures and how they would've been affected- besides Elvis, of course ? What about with Bruce Springsteen, say- would he still have written BORN IN THE USA back in 84 if he'd gone to Nam ?
