Murray, Long, ?; Republican candidate for an alt-1936 election

I'm toying with the idea of an alt-1936 election where William H. Murray is president (due to getting the VP pick and FDR being assassinated) and is getting an independent challenge from Long. Who would the Republican candidate be? My simple understanding is that Alf Landon got the pick because he was the best of the relatively few Republicans to have held on until that point and that he was a somewhat liberal Republican at that. The Republicans probably would've had a very different performance under a president Murray, so I'm wondering who else would've got the nomination.

Would this Republican have any chance of winning or would they be as screwed as Landon even with a Long challenge?

Hmmm. This era interests me, though I don't know much about Republican politics in the 1930's. My guess is that Landon could still get the nod, but what about Frank Nox, Landon's OTL Running Mate?

Robert Taft is a possibility, though I think it could be hard for him to win the election, as his policies would remind too many people of Hoover's. William Borra is perhaps a longshot candidate, though I think he'd probably miss out too.

I wonder what TR JR was doing at the time-and whether butterflies could make him a viable candidate in 1936? If so, I can see a republican new deal in 1937, if not, Landon could well still be nominated-and he'd probably win due to the Murray/Long splirt.

Was Landon the type to try to pass a Republican New Deal I wonder? I wonder how that would affect party alignment if Democrat Murray was the one who dragged his feet and Republican Landon had been more zealous about it.
