Multi-lingualism in Europe during Migration Era

During the migration era the population structure changed. Groups were formed and dissolved. Societies needed a a common language, as Gothic was in the Hunnic host and latin in the Western Roman Empire.

How common was multi-lingualism during this historical period?

ERE ambassadors to Huns and later Avars pretty much report that people could speak more than one language. How widespread it was is unknown but if I had to make a guess the steppe people political units were probably highly multilingual simply due to the nature and composition of such groups.
