MUCH earlier sound recording

I saw an episode of CSI which suggested that sound might be recorded by accident on a potter's wheel.

WI some such thing happened and was noticed somewhere between 500 and 5000 years ago.

The idea was put forward more than 30 years ago, that you should be able to pick-up noises from a potters wheel or objects made thereupon. The method to pick-up or the medium to do so wasn't described however. So it would take someone to develop the idea and make a pick-up tool to unveil the sound and some device to store the sounds. Something like the phonograph or like.

It isn't so much a matter of the recording medium as it is the means of capture. You need something sensitive enough to pick up and transmit sound waves with limited amounts of distortion. I think the Chinese are the best candidates for an early development of sound recording. They have a history of sophisticated devices that utilized accoustics in one fashion or another.
