Moving the slaves out west

I’ve seen a few threads here about moving the former slaves out west after the civil war during reconstruction similar to the exoduster movement. The problem is by that time their were already a good amount of whites out in the west that definetly didn’t want to have to compete for jobs with blacks. Aswell Southern elite didn’t want to lose their cheap labor. So I was wondering what if we backtrack a little bit?

The American colonisation society in 1825 seeing the failure of Liberia due to disease look for alternatives to move the free blacks. They also take note of the success of settlers that have gone with Stephen A Austin to Texas under liberal immigration laws of Mexico. A plan is resolved of instead of moving the free blacks back to Africa they are sent out west. The society buys up land in Alta California and sends its first 250 blacks to Alta California prolly the southern Arizona/New Mexico area where their is land to grow cotton. The free settlers are given land and most become farmers. As the communities grew larger in Alta California they spread further close to the coast diversifying into wine vineyards. With 300,000 free blacks at the time and many states that had laws outlawing free blacks(though not enforcing them) theirs a large population of settlers to pool. Maybe after Nat turners revolt states enforce these laws and a large boost of settlers occurs in the 1830s?

Anyway what do y’all think of this is? What would be the effects? Anyway this is just the background for this idea haven’t fleshed out what happens after. Bonus points for California republic.

A big problem is that the overland routes to California are not well laid out yet. The Oregon Trail, which was the first major trail west, leading to, you guessed it, Oregon, only really got underway in the 30s. So it's either ship them, or lay out a new trail to California, both expensive propositions.

It's easier to just dump them into Texas, or perhaps below the Rio Grande.

Any successful endeavor has to include training, supplies, support. Merely getting free blacks someplace isn't enough

It's too bad that Mexico economy was so badly damaged by the war of independence. Pre independence, there were many areas in need of workers. A strong Mexico would likely accept free blacks into the heart of Mexico, where they would be integrated.

Why not Indian territory? It isn't as if the Government was very considerate of AmerIndian rights.

Otherwise, Texas beyond the Colorado River would make sense. Most American settlement was in eastern Texas, which environmentally is pretty much a continuation of the American South. Between the Colorado and the Nueces there wasn't much settlement, hence why the Germans were able to move in pretty quickly.

note that sending a lot of them way out west might not be necessary... the south itself had a lot of undeveloped/unclaimed land that wasn't really settled until after the ACW. There was a lesser known 'go south' movement right alongside the 'go west' movement. Perhaps the freed slaves could be sent to these closer areas. Although... settling undeveloped lands is damn hard...

How about Florida?

I would think that slave owners would balk at having free black 'reservations' so close. So would the free slave society. being so close would make it tantalizing for slaves to escape and flee there. Slave owners would demand them back and probably go looking for them forcefully. they might be a bit unscrupulous about abducting some legitimate free slaves.

Probably best to avoid that scenario and ship the free blacks far away. Don't forget that part of the motivation of Liberia is that it removes the blacks from US soil. Abolitionists of the time often disliked blacks almost as much as they disliked slavery.
