Mou to Liverpool, Rafa to Chelsea

WI in 2004 things had happened differently with Liverpool getting Mourinho and Chelsea getting Rafa Benitez. Would Liverppol have won their 20th tilte under the Special one or would Mourinho not be able to cemet his legacy in England?

Mourinho's words in the Daily Telegraph:

Liverpool are a team that interests everyone and Chelsea does not interest me so much because it is a new project with lots of money invested in it. I think it is a project which, if the club fail to win everything, then [Roman] Abramovich could retire and take the money out of the club. It's an uncertain project. It is interesting for a coach to have the money to hire quality players but you never know if a project like this will bring success

Interesting, I would like to see a timeline over this. I'm sure Liverpool will do well under Mourinho, and Chelsea may only reach UEFA Cup/Europa League standard.

I believe Owen will still leave, pretty interesting who will be the replacement? Do Liverpool have the funds to bring in Drogba?
Will Abramovich's money result in a more expensive Spanish overhaul?

Owen may still do well if he remains at Liverpool. He might still be playing for England. If he does leave, he should head to a British club and not Real Madrid. I'd say he leaves for a club like Man United.

And because he managed to win the champions league with Porto, I reckon he would not need big funds to orchestrate Liverpool's return to power.
Even with those Liverpool funds he can still bring in Paulo Ferreira, Carvalho possibly being too expensive. Or maybe even Deco? Rafa did spend 14.5 Million on Cisse and 10.7 on Alonso.
Owen staying is an interesting notion. Maybe have Owen stay on the prospect of being coached by a manager who has just recently won the Champions League?

Money is the key factor in this - Benitez will win trophies with Chelsea (though not as dominant as Mourinho domestically) and may well get a Champions League. Mourinho will get some success to Liverpool, and could win a title - however, if Gillette and Hicks still take over the club and load it with debt I can't see Mourinho staying at all - he's never been one who gets on with directors at the best of times, and especially not ones who are crippling his buying power in the market at a time when everyone else is expanding.

Put simply, Liverpool lack the financial clout to compete consistently at the very top level when you have Man Utd's incredible commercial income and Chelsea's unlimited funding - they can win trophies, but will not dominate. This won't change no matter who the manager is.

He just won a CL with Porto which was not exactlly a very rich club compared to the likes of ManU or Real, so I don't think that money will be too much of a problem. Plus a coach like Mou might get the team better results than Rafa.
