I seriously considered doing Soviet Invasion of Poland, 1981 instead of Soviet Invasion of Iran, 1981.

Not as much potential as the October War, but Pakistan at the time was pretty much pro-U.S. and the USSR was working hard to draw the Indians into its web (something it never quite pulled off).

A couple incidents in the Indian Ocean and things could get REALLY interesting. Neither side was really excited about backing down in those days.
