Which presidential election in US history do you find most interesting? For me, it’s 1968. It almost plays out like a well thought-out drama movie. The Incumbent President announces to the nation that he will not seek the nomination, much to the shock of every American. In the GOP, a former loser of another presidential election (1960) decides to try for a shot at redemption and edges out competition from the conservative in his party. The Democratic Party is split between the counterculture liberals and the establishment, leading to the 2 candidates which espouse each movement becoming the 2 frontrunners for the Democratic Primaries, and the liberal being assassinated. The DNC literally has riots whilst the issue of a very unpopular war takes center stage. In the midst of all of this chaos, a racist southerner steps into the election, garnering massive support from the deep south and taking many votes for himself, further complicating the tangled mess of the election. All 3 campaign their hearts out and just when it looks safe for the GOP candidate, the Democratic candidate announces his opposition to the war, and his popularity rises rapidly. In just a couple of days, the election’s fate is now uncertain. Results come out, and the Republican has won by an absolute hair. The entire history and fate of the United States and Indochina is entirely changed because of this extremely interesting chaos of an election. What’s your favorite US presidential election, and why?
