Most anti-smoking plausible TL

pre 1900, reduce tobacco trade.

post 1900, perhaps a more dystopic society where vices are very hard to get..

Can you get smoking outlawed? If not, how much can you restrict it?

One way to get something more likely to be outlawed is to have an enemy of the United States get into it, the problem is that I doubt that we could end up with any of our enemies of the United States associated with Tobacco that wasn't in OTL.

In OTL, the world leaders that I associate with Tobacco are FDR, Churchill and Castro...

About the only way that springs to mind is to have someone like Saddam Hussein buy out one of the major cigarette manufacturers, but I'm not sure that does much more than shift the brands around...

Another option is to have a President who smoked be diagnosed with Lung Cancer and have *that* play out in the media. Say Reagan gets diagnosed with Terminal Lung Cancer in Spring of 1985? or GWB in 2005?

A victorious Third Reich is a good candidate, even though it might sound surprising at first. I see no reason why their extensive anti-smoking campaigns would not continue in such TL during postwar times as well.

Seems like you'd need a victorious confederacy then.

The Cotton gin is developed a century earlier. Tobacco cultivation falls by the wayside as a result.

AFAIK tobacco use is rather low in Western World right now anyway. Biggest consumers of tabacco products are former U.S.S.R. states and China. Not sure what PODs are needed to decrease smoking in those nations...

Didn’t McCarthy try to associate marijuana with a Communist-Chinese conspiracy to undermine America :D?

I know one of the Kings of Scotland (I think) wanted to ban tobacco, convinced it instigated all sorts of health problems. Maybe if he were more succesful and then Britain ruled and blocked tobacco?

James I of Great Britain, actually. And he didn't succeed. After all, it was the main export of Virginia.

I knew he was a king of Scotland, just couldn't remember if he had England at the time or not. So he was the first of England, but not technically of Britain though right?

I think that it would be funny if Michael Bloomburg was caught trying to bum a cigarette, it would be like the Larry Craig scandal. A closet self-loathing smoker.
