Moscow 1987: W-German Neo Nazi crashlands his Cessna into the Kremlin

1987: W-German Neo-Nazi Mathias Rust crashlands his Cessna(filled with explosives) into the Kremlin, killing himself, the entire Politburo, Gorbatjov and the entire Sovjet General staff.

What then? World War 3? Or would the USSR simply collapse? Having lost its entire top.

The entire Politburo and Soviet General Staff wouldn't all be in one place at any given time anyway.

A Cessna, even fully laden with explosives will not cause the level of damage to the Kremlin to plausibly kill the entire upper echelons of the soviet leadership.

How about Mathias Rust and his Amazing Homemade Atom Bomb flying into the Kremlin. Just a little wet dream of mine...

I don' think the PoD works but it is interesting in it self. What if the whole Polite Buro (made up of polite men?:D) is killed of in that time period. It might be traced back to Germany, in which case:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Taking into account that "regional" level of the Soviet leadership (leaders of the Republics CPSU branches) was generally more rigid (and they would undoubtedly take over if Politburo is gone) and Yeltsin was political nobody at this point, such an event could actually prolong USSR's agony for some time or even prevent breakup from happening. Most likely replacement for Gorbachov will be Nazarbaev and he's not a push-over, to put it mildly.
