Once the Mozhaisk line has been broken through the 3rd and the 4th Panzer Armies early in October before it can be properly manned by the Soviets at Volokolamsk and Borodino, an encirclement around Moscow by the northern and central pincers is well within the range of feasibility in terms of Von Bock and Army Group Centre's capabilities by this point in October.
how on earth does that happen? It snowed on 10/7/41 and then immediately melted and the roads turned to liquid shit for 5 weeks (forgive my french) The entire German army collapsed into a sea of mud in the center front. They humanly couldn't displace their guns and tanks forward or develop forward airfields for 10 days, the German 4th army nearly collapsed on itself the last week in October when attacked by a couple of t-34 battalions because they hadn't been able to move up their artillery

the first frost to end the mud problems didn't occur until the second week in November, and by then Moscow's defenses had been reinforced, to the point where the exhausted, frozen and starving troops of AGC couldn't do anything to them, and didn't other than get driven back to where they started from
