More UK Analogue terrestrial TV channels / BBC TV licence fee scrapped

Before it was recently replaced by digital in late october last year, the UK had 5 main analogue terrestrial TV channels (not including local / regional analogue channels).

I've always wondered how many more national analogue TV channels could have appeared over the years beyond BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 with possibly more specialist channels (e.g. News-only, Sports/Football-only, etc). Also, how would scrapping the yearly mandatory television licence fee effect the BBC (used to fund the latter unlike the other channels) following the alternate Peacock Committee? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peacock_Committee)
