More tank in WWI

IMO, there's 2 possible ways to advance tank development. Both depend on some bright spark somewhere doing a bit more than OTL, & preferably having the influence to get things done. I'd pick Churchilll, with his fertile imagination... First, he could examine the ACW & see the combination of firepower & entrenchment threatens to make traditional European tactics futile, & wonders if motorized armored vehicles with something like footed wheels might not be useful. Or, he could be covering the Russo-Japanese War, see the trench warfare there, & imagine the same solution. Of course, the footed wheel isn't a perfect solution, so...

If you were to delay WWI then this would be a lot more plausible. An interesting route to tanks would be to have the RN try to support an opposed beach landing prior to the Great War and have the troops slaughtered by machne gun fire, and have them develop amphibious tanks for the initial landing, when the Army see this, service pride insists they get in the game as well, so it becomes competitive between the marines and the army.

The problem is finding some place this can occur. Having RN officers observe such a disaster in the Russo-Japanese war is probably insufficent, but there aren't that many other viable enemies. Maybe during an intervention in China, or during the suppression of a mutiny in Northern Ireland, although both of those are major PoDs themselves.
