More successful Green Lantern Film?

Is there a way, with a relatively minor POD, of making the Green Lantern film more successful, hopefully to the level that it merits a sequel and really does start a DCCU? (Bonus points if Nathan Fillion gets the leading role :p).

Forget Nathan Fillion - Anthony Mackee gets the lead role of John Stewart, a Marine sergeant in Afghanistan who, upon discover of a crashed alien named Amon Sur, is made his replacement in the Green Lantern Corp. Now he has to learn the ropes of being a lantern, while helping his old squad mates beat off an attack by the vicious space pirates who killed Amon Sur.

Boom. I just gave you Superman meets The Hurt Locker, with an added bonus of making the prognieter of the DC Movie Universe the first serious attempt at a black superhero - it would have practically sold tickets by itself!

The main character must be Hal Jordan because he is the main Green Lantern and the DC will not accept another protagonist.

Use the above but make Hal the injured 'alien'. He gives Stewart a lower powered ring while he uses his to rid himself of some sort of will-sapping illness/hallucination. Said space pirates are driven off by Stewart and GOOD OLD ALL-AMERICAN FIREPOWER ala Transformers.

Giving DC the choice of which Lantern to use in the JLA movie.

Tell that to the DC Animated Universe, where John Stewart was THE Green Lantern, save for a couple cameos from Hal Jordon and Kyle Rainer. Part of the reason he's as popular and well known as he is now was he was featured so prominently.

Plus, if you really want a Justice League movie, Stewart makes a much better fit than Jordon does. Jordon is a brash, bold flyboy with a quick with and snarky tongue - in otherwords, a role that in the Justice League would already be taken by the Flash. Stewart, being a military veteran, would serve as the team strategist and NCO, as well as the Straight Man to the Flash's comedic mannerisms, and serving as the team NCO would make him the go to second in command for whether Superman, Batman or Aquaman takes the helm of the Justice League.

Plus, from a marketing and press standpoint - he would be the first prominent, memorable and well developed black superhero, and seeing him stand shoulder to shoulder with Superman or Batman would both generate serious buzz and attract butts to the seats.

I was thinking more Battle Los Angeles than Transformers, but yeah, you get the idea. Hell, for extra credit, make them the DC War Comics heroes, allowing a possible film based off of Men of War or GI Combat - you give me a movie that has John Stewart AND Frank Rock, I'll see it five times myself :D

I was skeptical at first, but I've begun to see your point. Using John Stewart would allow the writers and writers of future movies to draw more from the animated series (which is always good). Plus, I would see a movie with John Stewart and Frank Rock five times too :D,
