How could the Ikkō-ikki be more successful? Their main problem seems to have been that they were disorganized and lacked leadership. Maybe some skillful and charismatic leader could have changed that? Chaotic conditions during the Sengoku jidai also helped them greatly as there wasn't any centralized government which could have opposed them. Thus they would benefit from a longer period of political instability in Japan.

I must admit that my knowledge on the Ikko-ikki is rather patchy but I still find them rather interesting.
