More Succesful Ikkō-ikki?

How could the Ikkō-ikki be more successful? Their main problem seems to have been that they were disorganized and lacked leadership. Maybe some skillful and charismatic leader could have changed that? Chaotic conditions during the Sengoku jidai also helped them greatly as there wasn't any centralized government which could have opposed them. Thus they would benefit from a longer period of political instability in Japan.

I must admit that my knowledge on the Ikko-ikki is rather patchy but I still find them rather interesting.

The biggest problem the II faced was Oda Nobunaga. He had no room for them in his land and he had no problem massacring their followers (as well as anyone unfortunate person who happened to be nearby). They also attracted the rage of Tokugawa Ieyasu before.
If they kept quiet, then Nobunaga might've saw fit to ally with them instead of seeking their destruction and in time, they might've gained more influence over time.

I think Nobunaga and Tokugawa are such persons though that even if the Ikkō-ikki are able to keep a lower profile there will be some sort of collision later. The II would be in a better position to oppose them though and the territory controlled by them could be larger.
