More Fascist France?

Hey guys,

My last thread like this involved Britain, now I'm going to ask about France. How could you make France more fascist (or at least more like Spain after its Civil War) and much less communist by the 1936 Legislative elections. The POD can go as far back as you need it to without causing many ripple affects outside of France.

Also when I say fascist (as I explicitly said in the previous thread) I don't mean that they have to be all uniformed and all that nonsense, they just simply have to at least have fascist views (and be willing to rename France as the 'French State'.)

Right have fun guys, let it rip :)

More primary-school focused 'labour strikes must be arbitrated by the government for the sake of the economy' indoctrination in the curriculum so they will agree to be pushed into industrial sectors in total obedience in order to begin promoting camaraderie for the populist party later in life?

"Would you like Freedom Fries with that?"

Would French Fascists have been monarchists? Possibly. Would they have been Bonapartists? I doubt it.

I suspect 'fascist' and 'French Empire' are probably mutually exclusive.

Perhaps have the riots of February 6, 1934, succeed in toppling the Third Republic. This can easily be accomplished by having François de La Rocque's quasi-fascist Croix-de-Feu join in the riots, which probably would have led to a victory on the part of the right-wing factions. This would most likely have led to a perhaps not fascist, but certainly more right-wing and authoritarian France.

Atlantic Friend has a very good TL on this (Crossfires, an Alternate France of the 1930s) and it could prove insightful.

Bonapartist monarchism had suffered a pretty much fatal blow with the death of the Prince Imperial in 1879. The vast majority of French fascists with monarchist leanings were Orleanists. In fact, the Orleanist pretenders during that era were by and large supporters of fascism, or at least had fascistic sympathies.

Good point, I've changed the required name to 'French State' now :)

Thank you, I shall read this TL :)
