More Democratic USSR

Now this idea has bounceing around in my head, here goes
After Stalin died in 1953 a collective group of men took over until Kruschev was elected by them, now what if they put out two canidates for election by the people? Now both these canidates are from the Communist Party, of course, but they are elected by the people? Is this possible and what would the effects be?

I'm personally doubtful as to whether you could successfully apply democracy to a totalitarian society like the USSR, especially right after Stalin; most people would likely think it a ploy to make them incriminate themselves by voting "wrongly", thus refraining from voting at all. Or conversely, they would be volunteered to votwe for the "right" candidate by local Party officials. Et cetera...

Practical difficulties aside, it would depend on the candidates. Me, I always like to imagine Beria winning the power struggle and selling the GDR back to Germany before it becomes a total trainwreck...

This is very much the system they have in Iran - whereupon the Supreme Guardian Council (Iran's "politburo", if you like) approves multiple candidates for the Presidency, which the voters than elect from the choice given to them. It gives a vaneer of democracy to a de-facto totalitarian state, so it's feasible that the USSR could have gone down this route and maybe even lasted a bit longer as a result.
