More colonial partitions before independence

Other than both Palestine and British India, which colonies (or Mandates, which were de facto colonies) could have realistically been partitioned before they acquired independence?

Indeed, in exactly which other colonies could large movements in favor of partition realistically occur?

Any thoughts on this?

For the record, I am very impressed that Jinnah managed to turn the unlikely into reality within a decade or so; indeed, were there any other politicians in various colonies who could create a viable separatist movement--especially relatively quickly?

There was a proposal in the 1950s by a French politician named Alain Peyrefitte about partitioning Algeria into a European state and a Muslim state. And this post talks about a possible secession for a White Portuguese South Mozambican state around the early 1970s.

Wasn't there too some discussion about dividing of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan? So we could have much earlier independent South Sudan.

Malaysia into Chinese and Malay areas

OTL. :p

That aside, it'll be a huge mess akin to the Indian partitions. The divisions are just not that clear-cut beyond Penang and Singapore. I think having another state or two going on its own (e.g. Johor, Sarawak) might work.

He was quite fortunate to be able to build the strength of the Muslim League when Gandhi launched his ill-fated Quit India movement that got the Congress leadership in prison. Without them vacating the Muslim seats and the political scene, Jinnah's message would have been squeezed out by Gandhi.

So, would an India-style partition result in massive population movements, pogroms, and whatnot in Malaysia?

So, without Jinnah, there would be no large-scale Muslim separatism in India?

The Union of South Africa wasn't a done deal, pre-1910. It's not a stretch for all four of the colonies to remain separate. Other possibilities are a Natal-Cape union, or a Natal-Cape-Orange River Colony Union, with Transvaal going it alone.
